Pugwash Netherlands

Invitation to a Webinar on AI,  Drones and  Cyberwarfare

Tuesday, November 17th, 19:00 to 20:30 Amsterdam Time

In this first Webinar by Pugwash Netherlands on contemporary developments in weapons and warfare, we have invited two experts to share their insights on the usage and future development in the relatively new technologies of  AI, Drones and Cyberwarfare.

Drs. Sico van der Meer is a Research Fellow at the Clingendael Institute. His research focuses on non-conventional weapons such as Weapons of Mass Destruction (nuclear, chemical, biological) and cyber weapons, from a strategic policy perspective.

Dr Elke Schwarz of the University of London.  Her research focuses on the political and ethical implications of new technologies, in particular digital technologies and autonomous systems. In 2018, she published her monograph “Death Machines: The Ethics of Violent Technologies”.'

The two speakers will give relatively short introductions.  The participants can then use the Chat function of MEET to make comments or ask questions, which the moderator will pass on to the speakers.

The meeting will be held in English using MEET. Any browser can be used.  Those who turn on their webcam will be visible to the others on screen.

We are sending this invitation to individuals, European Pugwash Groups and other groups that we know, both in the Netherlands and abroad.

REQUEST: Please forward this invitation to colleagues and others who could be interested, especially if you are receiving this as a representative of a group. Please avoid delays, as the invitees must have time to register for the webinar.

Stockholm Security Conference (SSC 20)

On 17–20 November 2020, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) will host the fifth annual Stockholm Security Conference (SSC 20). The theme of this year's conference is 'International Cooperation: Navigating the Way Ahead'. In light of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, SSC 20 will convene in a virtual format.

Through eight sessions, the conference will explore trends in international cooperation and their implications for the future of international security and multilateralism. One of the key questions is whether, when there is more  need than ever for international cooperation, there is a growing tendency by the major powers towards unilateral behaviour. If so, what does that imply for multilateral approaches to shared problems and challenges? The panels   will analyse and discuss the key challenges from global, regional, organizational and thematic perspectives. Specifically, the conference agenda will be split into thematic, institutional and regional sessions: thematic sessions will take place on nuclear arms control, techno-nationalism and responsible use of artificial intelligence; institutional sessions will focus on the OSCE and the UN; and the regional sessions will focus on Northeast Asia and Africa. The conference will provide an informal setting for in-depth discussion between leading experts and representatives from the political, military, academic and diplomatic communities as well as civil society. Gathering different communities at the same conference to look at joint responses to shared challenges will help identify different aspects of the problem and ways forward towards the solution.
